Front Yard Makeover - Spring 2010

I thought I'd finally post pictures of the final phase of ripping out every piece of our yard that existed when we moved in (standard builder-grade grass, bushes and a tree) and making it our own. In 2006, we ripped out the grass on the side yard of the front of the house (if you could even call it that). Then, in 2008, we took on the monumental task of overhauling the back yard (posted those pics that summer on the blog if you'd like to go back and view those pics). That one was rough!

This year, we finally tore out the grass in the front yard that is so ridiculously hard to keep green because of the west-facing sun that beats down on it all summer long. Once again, thank heavens for Darren - he's definitely the muscle behind this operation. I planted all of the plants, but he did the grunt work - I'm a wimp and cannot handle it!

This is our house as it looked the day we closed on it back in February of 2004

This a mini makeover we conducted in 2006 - we added a tree ring around the Maple tree and tore out the grass patch on the right-hand side of the driveway and put in a mound with plants and a Linden tree. Notice the dead patch in the grass...our battle every summer! Hence, the removal of all the grass!

Here's what the house looked like this spring when we added the two Baby Blue Spruce trees we fell in love with at Home Depot, right after we promised each other we weren't going to do any projects this year.

Ripping Out the Grass...

Added a few boulders...

Ripped out the rest of the grass...

Laying down fabric and bringing in more rock...

Tada!!! A new, xeriscaped yard!! We love it so much, and our water bill has been awesome this summer! Now we just need everything to grow up.

...And our back yard is filling in nicely in its 3rd summer since its overhaul too!
